The salience network is a large-scale brain network that consists of the anterior insula and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, among other regions. It is involved in detecting and integrating salient stimuli from different sources, such as sensory, emotional, and cognitive information. The salience network also helps to switch between the default mode network and the central executive network, which are responsible for internal and external cognition, respectively.
