According to Jung, archetypes are universal, inherited patterns of thought and behaviour that are present in the collective unconscious of all human beings. They are innate potentials that are expressed in human behaviour and experiences, and are shaped by individual and cultural factors. archetypes are hidden forms that are activated when they enter consciousness and influence the degree of individuation, or the development of the individual’s unique identity.
